DO GESTO: LABANOTATION AND OTHER DANCE WRITING
WELCOME

OUR LABORATORY:
The Grafias do Gesto Laboratory, created in 2012, belonging to the Department of Body Art at the School of Physical Education and Sports (EEFD), is coordinated by professors Marcus Machado and Waleska Britto, and has extension and research students involved.
Its vision is to be a reference center that integrates teaching, research and extension proposals, aimed at the study and use of different forms of movement writing, whether in scientific, artistic production, choreographic creation and clinical practice.
The laboratory's major action focuses on offering courses and preparing teaching material in Portuguese for study and research, learning and spreading movement writing. The laboratory also stands out for its research in Labanotation and Motif Notation. However, several forms of writing dance and movement scores are also investigated, such as Beauchamp-Feuillet notation, Benesh Movement Notation and SignWriting.
PROJECT:
Throughout its existence, the research laboratory has developed courses in Motif, Labanotation, Body Dramaturgies and participated in numerous scientific events, presenting research on dance notation. He is currently responsible for the project Gilberto de Assis: memories of Afro-Brazilian dance, which researches and structures the Afro dance technique originating from Mercedes Baptista.
In addition to training courses, it is planned to publish didactic material for teaching and disseminating dance notations, articles arising from the reflections of those involved in projects linked to the laboratory and participation in scientific events.
PARTNERSHIPS:
The Laboratory's research and dissemination partners are the Dance Notation Bureau, an American institution located in New York – an agent for the development and training of notators at an international level – and maintains contact with other institutions of international relevance.
